EMDR therapy. Evidence-based reprocessing.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is one of the most well-researched and effective treatments for trauma. It works by helping your brain process traumatic memories in a way that reduces their emotional intensity - without requiring you to talk through every detail of what happened.
EMDR is not magic. It is a structured protocol that uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, or tapping in the virtual setting) while you focus briefly on a traumatic memory. Over multiple sessions, the memory loses its emotional charge and becomes less distressing.
Our EMDR-trained therapists, led by Albertina Hinds, deliver EMDR virtually. Research validates that online EMDR is as effective as in-person EMDR.
Who this is for.
- You have a specific traumatic memory or series of memories that continue to affect your daily life.
- Talk therapy has helped you understand your experience but the emotional charge of the memory has not lifted.
- You experience flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or physical reactions tied to past events.
- You have been recommended EMDR by a doctor, psychiatrist, or another mental health professional.
- You want a structured, evidence-based approach to processing trauma.
Our approach.
EMDR follows an 8-phase protocol: history-taking, preparation and resourcing, assessment, desensitisation (the bilateral stimulation phase), installation of adaptive beliefs, body scan, closure, and re-evaluation.
Before any reprocessing begins, your therapist will spend time helping you build coping skills and grounding resources. This is non-negotiable - EMDR without preparation can be destabilising.
In the virtual setting, bilateral stimulation typically uses a moving dot on screen or self-administered tapping (butterfly tap). Both are validated by EMDR research.
What to expect in session.
Your first 2-3 sessions focus on history and preparation - your therapist learns what you are working with and you build coping resources together.
When you are ready, reprocessing begins. A typical reprocessing session lasts the full 50 minutes. You will focus briefly on a target memory while your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation. Then you notice what comes up - thoughts, images, feelings, body sensations - and the process continues.
Single-incident trauma typically takes fewer reprocessing sessions than complex or developmental trauma. Your therapist will check in regularly about pace and what is shifting for you.
